Screenplay

17-year-old Rohan is expelled from the Bishop Cotton School, Shimla boarding school along with three friends Vikram, Benoy and Maninder after they are caught by their warden watching an adult film off campus. Rohan returns home to Jamshedpur to a stern, abusive and alcoholic father and a 6-year-old half-brother, Arjun whose existence Rohan hadn't known about. His father forces him to jog every morning and race him at the last leg. He also has to work at his father's metal works factory and attend engineering classes at the local university. His father's disappointment takes the form of verbal and physical abuse and constant humiliation. Rohan's uncle supports his ambitions of being a writer but his father will have none of it.

An uninterested Rohan deliberately fails the exam so that his father will give up on him, leaving him free to pursue his dream of becoming a writer. At the same time, his father is summoned to school to take Arjun away because of something he has done. This causes his father to lose an important contract. Rohan comes home to a scene where Arjun is being rushed to the hospital for some unknown reason. His father says that Arjun fell down the stairs. Fearful of complicating matters, Rohan lies to his father and says that he passed his exams. His father then goes to Calcutta on an urgent business trip leaving Rohan to take care of Arjun in the hospital. In the hospital, Rohan impresses a lot of people including doctors and nurses with his stories and poems. He befriends Arjun and discovers that he was beaten by their father after losing the contract.

His father returns from Calcutta and finds that Rohan has failed the exams. Enraged, the father assaults Rohan in the night but apologizes the very next day. The next morning their father declares that he is going to marry again and decides to send Arjun to a boarding school while Rohan is supposed to quit college in order to work full-time at the factory. When Rohan's uncle offers to take Arjun in, he is belittled by Rohan's father for his impotency and thrown out of the house while Rohan pleads with his uncle to take him away. Furious about this, his father burns Rohan's diary where he has written all his poems. Later, Rohan's father introduces his new wife and step-daughter to Rohan. One day, Rohan takes all his frustration out on his father's car by a river but some policemen happen to see him in the act. He spends a night in prison after his father comes to know about the car and leaves him to his fate.

He finds his to-be stepmother and her relatives in the house when he returns. Rohan learns from Arjun that he would be leaving for boarding school the next day. Rohan simply wishes him luck and prepares to leave home. On his way out, Rohan exchanges bitter words with his father in front of his guests and when confronted and aggravated by his father, punches him and runs away. His father chases Rohan through the streets on foot, but cannot catch up to him anymore. Rohan spends the night at his uncle's house. His uncle has a quiet word with Rohan in the night, it is implied that it is regarding Arjun's fate. The next morning Rohan returns to his father's house and finds Arjun waiting outside while his father has gone to get an auto-rickshaw to take him to boarding school. Rohan convinces Arjun to go with him to Mumbai leaving the watch and note behind explaining his decision and warning his father not to look for them with the threat of revealing his attacks on Arjun to the police. Rohan leaves the house with Arjun.

The film was set and shot in Jamshedpur.

In 2002, while working on Devdas as an assistant director, Vikramaditya Motwane saw Sixteen directed by Ken Loach, which was about a troubled teenager who sets out to raise money for a new home. He said that the film left "a deep imprint on my mind" and thought "why couldn’t a similar film about a youngster be made in India?" He took instances from his own life and surrounding and wrote the screenplay that revolved around a problematic father-son relationship. He decied to base the film in the industrial town of Jamshedpur, Jharkhand after he was struck with the contrast between the Tata Steel area and the industrial township of Adityapur. He felt that the city was an "amalgamation of diverse cultural influences." Motwane wrote the script and narrated it to his friend Anurag Kashyap and realised that "some of the scenes have resemblance to his real life" like taking a car out in the night and having fun with friends. Kashyap loved the script and told Motwane that "if no one produces it, you come to me, I will do so."

Motwane had signed Kashyap as a dialogue writer in 2003 and paid him ?10,000 (US$140). Motwane could not find producer for his film since there was no commercial actor attached to it. Kashyap had worked with Motwane on his unreleased film Paanch, where the latter was the song choreographer. Kashyap said that he knew about Motwane "how good he was" and then decided to produce Udaan. Motwane had completed the script in 2003 and it took him seven years to find the producer for the film. The film was jointly produced by Kashyap, Sanjay Singh and UTV Motion Pictures. Motwane said the many people "wanted to add and subtract things to increase the selling value of the film", which he did not agree upon. Kashyap wanted to produce his film then but his own films were unreleased. Motwane called the film's scripting the "most important stage".

While the film is not an autobiographical account, Motwane said that the script has traces of it: "As a first time writer there was a lot that I took from my own life, in terms of certain themes and references, with observations of friends." Motwane initially made some changes in the script when he was looking for financers. He called the final version of the script "a combination of first and second drafts." Kashyap had told Motwane in 2003 after reading the script that only he will produce the film. In 2009, Motwane served as the co-writer for Kashyap's Dev.D and then agreed to produce Udaan. Motwane mentioned that it is "one of the few films made on teenagers and their issues growing up" as teen films "usually tackle love stories". For a scene in the film involving Rohan's mother, Motwane used his wife's photograph in the film.

Newcomer Rajat Barmecha was cast in the role of Rohan after several screen tests by the casting director Jogi. Motwane did not like his initial auditions but Barmecha improved a bit later on and was selected. The film was set and shot extensively in Jamshedpur with local production crew. It was shot for 39 days in a 42 days shooting schedule in Hudco dam, Kaiser bungalow and the Circuit House area. It was also shot in Shimla for three days. The production crew included 13 students from the Mass Communication as well as ten actors from the city. The film was shot on super 16 format in sync sound. He called it a "simple straightforward film". Mahendra J. Shetty served as the film's director of photography while Dipika Kalra was the editor; Aditya Kanwar was the production designer. The film also stars Ronit Roy, Aayan Boradia, Ram Kapoor, Manjot Singh and Anand Tiwari in supporting roles.

The album received mostly positive response from critics. Nikhil Taneja of Hindustan Times wrote that "each song in Udaan literally takes flight from a soft, seminal intro, building up to a crescendo of indie, alternative rock." He also called the title track as "one of the most soul stirring tracks of this year". Kashmin Fernandes of Mid Day felt that the music and lyrics "run through with the innocent optimism". He also called the album an "uplifting gem". Joginder Tuteja of Bollywood Hungama wrote: "Udaan is one of those albums that don't necessarily take a huge start at the music stands."
