Lagaan is a beautiful movie that portraits the time when Britishers ruled India. The people had to pay revenues even when they had bad crops, destroyed due to the monsoon or no rains.
Aamir Khan played his role very well. The villagers of Champaner visit king Puran Singh to exempt them from tax due to drought, Britishers who ruled in their village came into the act and he kept an offer for the request of freeing them from paying taxes this year.
The offer was that they will be freed from paying taxes on the condition that they will play cricket match and if they win then they will not have to pay tax for next 3 years, but if Britishers won, they will have to pay double tax.
Bhuvan accepts the challenge of captain Andrew Rusell. Later villages regret on his decision since they don't know how to play and they had to pay for it. When no one was able to play the game, Captain Russell's sister, Elizabeth came for help and taught the ABCD of cricket, the ways to play the game and its rules hideously.
Bhuvan motivated them to practice. Initially, he had a support of only his mother and Gauri, but later all villagers come up for help and learn the game seriously.
The day of match arrives and game is in the favour of villages. They finally win by the saving six of Bhuvan.
They were freed from paying tax for the tenure and the Captain had to leave the village. The girl, Rose loved Bhuvan, and she did everything to make Bhuvan win. She steps out from her palanquin to bid a goodbye to Bhuvan and leaves, stays unmarried for her whole life and Gauri and Bhuvan get married and villagers lived happily ever.
