Sphere "involved asking members of the general public for their views on the technologies being developed in a project called SPHERE (Sensor Platform for HEalthcare in a Residential Environment), and what the outcomes might mean for them". As a result, "The creatures within the animation voiced opinions which reflected public reaction to SPHERE".

Sphere was created in preparation for the launch of the Elizabeth Blackwell Institute. According to the EPSRC:
As part of the Elizabeth Blackwell Institute launch in July 2013, an audience was shown a presentation of SPHERE involved a panel discussion as well as a question and answer session with the audience.
Sphere was uploaded to YouTube via the UniversityOfBristol channel on 4 September 2013, and uploaded to the aardmancommercials channel six days later.
The EPSRC described the film as a "Creature comforts-style animation film".
