WhatsApp may soon let users transfer chats to another phone number

WhatsApp might allow users to transfer their chat history to another number, which can make things a lot smoother for people.

Facebook-owned popular instant messaging platform WhatsApp is reportedly working on a way to let users transfer their chat history when migrating to a new phone that is using a different phone number. WaBetaInfo, which is known for leaking the upcoming WhatsApp features, has suggested that WhatsApp is currently testing the feature for both Android and iOS.

"This is very useful when you are changing device and phone number, so the process to change your phone number will be automatically launched before starting to migrate your chat history," Wabetainfo read.

However, users won't be able to transfer chats at any time they want. This can only happen if they are switching to a new phone. Apart from the messages, media will also be a part of the transfer process.

Presently,  if you are looking to restore a backup of your WhatsApp chats, your phone is required to have the same number and operating system like the older device.

The new development seems to be an extension of the ability to transfer WhatsApp chat history from one platform to another - from Android to iOS and vice versa - through a Chat History Migration tool, which is currently said to be in testing phase.
