  • Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awaas Yojana(PMGAY).


This scheme was previously Indra Awaas Yojana(IAY) is a social flagship welfare programme which was started by the Government of India (GOI) for providing housing for the rural poor of India. A similar scheme for urban poor of the nation was launched in 2015 as Housing For All by 2022. This scheme was launched in 1985 by then the prime minister of India Rajiv Gandhi which was named after Indra Gandhi (who also happened to be Rajiv Gandhi's mother and former prime minister of India). 



  • ABOUT THE SCHEME. 


The broad purpose of this scheme is to provide financial assistance to some of the weakest section of the society for them to upgrade and construct a house of respectable quality for their personal living. The aim of this scheme was to remove all the temporary (kutchcha) house from India by 2017. Since 1985, 25.2 million houses have been constructed under this scheme. Under Bharat Nirman phase 1 projected 6 million houses were targeted and 7.1 million actually constructed between the year 2005-06 to 2008-09.


Additional 12 million houses are planned to be constructed and renovated under the Bharat Nirman Scheme phase 2. As per the budget of 2011, the total funds allocated by Indra Awaas Yojana scheme have been set at 100 billion for construction of the houses for below poverty line (BPL) families with special focus on the left-wing extremist (LWE) districts.
