PostgreSQL

Introduction:

PostgreSQL was known as Postgres from Ingres database. It was the work developed by Michael Stonebraker and his team at the University of California, Berkeley. Postgres supports SQL so it was named as PostgreSQL. Postgres can handle a number of tasks. In 2007, the name was changed to alias Postgres. In macOS server, Postgres is default database while other operating system can also use the PostgreSQL.

PostgreSQL is an open source database management syatem which is moduled over a general purpose object-relation database. PostgreSQL emphasise extensibility and SQL compliance. Different custom functions can be added to diffrernt programming language with the help of PostgreSQL. PostgreSQL supports SQL and JSON for relational and non-relational queries simultaneously. PostgreSQL has ACID properties.

Application:

  • Financial industry: ACID properties and ability to perform database analytics make it ideal for financial industry. PostgreSQL have mathematical software integrated in it which support Matlab and R.

  • GovernmentGIS data: “PostGIS” help us to perform number of functions which process geometric data in different formats. We can handle Geodata using QGIS or GeoServer.

  • Manufacturing: PostgreSQL speed the business process. PostgreSQL can help in reducing the opration cost.

  • Webtechnology and NoSQL: Postgres provides scalability and helps to respond to many requests at that moment. Postgres work with web framework.

  • Scientific data: A research and scientific project requires terabytes of data. To handle the data PostgreSQL can be used. It has powerful SQL engine and have analytical capabilities.

Conclusion:

In 2007, PostgreSQL was ranked as the top 4th database. In year 2017, PostgreSQL was declared as “DBMS of the year” by DB-Engines. The use of PostgerSQL was increasing year by year more than 75 points. In 2018, it has raised itself at 3rd position. By the same year, PostgreSQL released its cluster control feature. PostgreSQL has focused to improve the functionality and stability of the database. In PostgreSQL 11, it has improved features like portioning, indexing, and storing procedures.
