INTRODUCTION: 


 The national archive of India (NOI) is a stockroom or a depository of the nin-current records of the Government of India (GOI) and holds them up for the use of administrators and other scholars. It was originally established as an imperial record department in Calcutta during 1891 ( the capital of British India). This place is an attached department, also functioning for the ministry of culture, Government of India.


HISTORY: 


The imperial record department was set up in Calcutta by G.W. Forest as the department head. In 1911 it was shifted to the new Capital of British India(New Delhi), and in 1926 it was shifted into a new building. This is one of the four museums and archive buildings planned by Sir Edwin Lutyen. 


On 6th July 1998, the president of India Shri K.R. Narayana declared the museum of National Archives open to the general public. This museum provides a representative overview of multifarious holdings of National Archives and promotes a common man's interest. 


National Archives has a regional office at Bhopal, and three records center at Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, and Pondicherry respectively.


RECORDS:


The holdings in the National Archives are in regular series starting from the year 1748. The records are in four categories namely- Public Records, Oriental Record, Manuscripts and Private Paper. 


The language includes- English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Arabia, Persian, Urdu, Modi, and material includes: paper, palm leaf, birch, bark, parchment.
