MICROSATELLITES

MICROSATELLITES

Simple sequence repeats are only known as microsatellites .these were discovered by LITT and LUTTY (1989)..these are found in genomes of all eukaryotes .

These are randomly arranged repeats of mono,di,tri,tetra and penta-nucleotides of different lengths of repeat motifs these are ,AT,AAAC,AGG,GA,etc.due to high abundance these are ideal DNA markers for gene mapping and population studies .These SSR length polymorphisms at different and individual loci are detected by PCR, .These DNA  lengths are found widely in animals and plants and shows high genetic variations. These are widely used in gene mapping. Gene bank sequence data have also been used for designing primers for amplification of microsatellites. Thus, SSR polymorphism based on the number of repeats units in a defined region of the genome.
