Learning Globally Acceptable and Non-Acceptable Gestures

One should be constantly aware of the person's body language which can be often misleading. As gestures and expressions mean different things in different cultures, the best way to prepare oneself for doing business with people from other cultures is to study their culture in advance. Seasoned business travelers suggest the following:
In Spain, a handshake lasts for five or seven strokes, Pulling away too soon may b interpreted as a sign of rejection. However, in France, it is a single stroke.
One should never give a gift of liquor in Arab countries.
In England, one should never stick pens or other objects in the front suit pocket. Doing this is considered awkward or clumsy.
One should give plenty of time while dealing with people in Africa. They are suspicious of people who are in a hurry and would never do business with them.
In Arab countries, it is considered rude to turn down food or drinks. It is an insult to refuse the hospitality of any kind. Accepting too quickly is also not advisable. A ritual refusal like "I don't want to put you to any trouble", is usually expected.
When dealing with Germans, Dutch, and swiss, one should stress the longevity of their company.
Punctuality
Be on time - no one wants to b kept waiting. If it is an unavoidable delay, try to contact the person. Keep in mind that you never know when u will encounter heavy traffic, wrecks, construction, or other delays. Allows allowing extra- time particularly if you are going to an interview.
Office Parties
Office parties are good opportunities to improve morale and build goodwill. Keep in mind these are people who see you every day and they will remember a lapse in behavior. Be aware of alcoholic consumption and do not embarrass yourself. Do not discuss business - this is a social occasion and an opportunity to learn more about your co-workers. Remember three words that are too often neglected in business: Please, thank and well done. Social skills can help us build a more productive relationship. In these changing times, one needs to prepare for a variety of encounters in both the business and social environments.
