INTRODUCTION:
The Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) is a residential girl's secondary school run by the Government of India (GOI) for the weaker section of the society. The plan was introduced in August 2004. It was then integrated into the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan program, to provide educational facilities for girls belonging to scheduled caste, scheduled tribes, other backward classes, minority communities and families below poverty line in educationally backward blocks.
OBJECTIVE OF THE SCHEME:
Gender inequality still persists in some part of the nation, and among the disadvantaged section. Looking at the enrolment trend for girls at an elementary level as compared to boys, especially at the upper primary level. The objective of KGBV is to ensure that the quality of education is feasible to the girls of this disadvantaged group by setting up residential schools with boarding facilities at an elementary level.
ELIGIBILITY OF THE SCHEME:
This criterion was revised in 2008 which stated:
1.An addition 316 educationally backward blocks with rural female literacy below 30%
2.94 towns/cities having minority poplution with a female literacy rate below the average national average
