The Amazon is burning, the Arctic's on fire, the Ocean's are boiling, the Coral reefs are dying, Greenland is melting, the Permafrost is collapsing, Antarctica is heating, Ecosystems are crashing, Earth is turing into desert, Emmisions are accelerating. Fires raged in Brazilian Amazon during 2017 in Arariboia , indegenious territory in the state of Maranhao. Some were started by the farmers trying to clear land for farming or cattle , others started to cover up illegal lodging operations , and some were natural. Now, 2019 is going to eclipse that. Maranhao like so many other states has been extensively lodged, and just a few pockets of original forest remains. The rest of the land has been turned to agricultural or cattle ranches.
Amazon rainforest or" lungs of our planet" produces 20% oxygen in the earth's atmosphere, It is the most diverse rainforest on Earth containing 1/3 of all the terrestrial plant, animals, and insect spices, 75% of which are unique to it. Amazon rainforest is World's carbon sink, without it the Earth's ability to lock excess carbon will reduce , this will increase the effects of global warming resulting in a global climate crises. It is home to more than 30 million people almost 1.6 mn belong to indigenous groups. According to BrazilsB space research center INPE, more than 75,000 forest fires have been detected in Amazon in 2019 alone , the highest since records began in 2013. The fires have resulted in carbondioxide release equivalent of 228 megatonns in 2019, the highest since 2010 carbon monoxide levels are also high accelerating climate change even further. If you think you're far away from Brazil and it can't affect you! About 1,700 miles away from the fire, the skies turned dark over San Paulo, Brazil as the thick smoke blocked the Sun's rays , the smoke is infact so dense that it can be seen from space. According to WWF, excessive cattle ranching is no. 1 culprit of deforestation in every Amazon country, and accounts for 80% of current deforestation. This is responsible for the release of 340 million tons of carbon every year, which is 3.4% of current global emmisions.Brazil is not the only country in the Amazon region experiencing a high number of fires. Venezuela is at second highest position with over 26,000 fires. Bolivia comes third with over 17,000 fires.
Just praying or raising awarness for amazon is not going to help Amazon or climate chhange. We're in the endgame now, the temperature is rising by 2.3 every year accelerating many natural calamities. How can we help it?
1. Stop eating red meat. The forests are being burnt out at the rate of 3 football fields per minute. All this just to raise cattle for the beef industry. And they give out methane. More green house gases = rise in global warming , it also cathes fire.
2. Segregate your waste. If we do not segregate our waste it goes to the landfill together , produces methane and catches fire. eg Deonar fire in mumbai.
3. Reduce your energy consumption, eg electricity, fuels, etc.
4. Substitute single use plastic products with cloth, steel , glass, paper etc.
5. Reduce to a minimalistic tiny living, avoid impulse and hoardingg of the things not needed and waste resources
6. You cannot compensate for the amazon but you can try to save your planet atleast. you've read nany things already about planting more trees, banning plastic etc. but you feel how can a single person make any difference.
You Can make a difference, because if you don't initiate now, we're doomed.
