Importance of Delegation

Delegation of authority is advantageous both to the superior and to the subordinate. The most important reasons for delegating are:

1.      Enables Superiors to Perform More Challenging Jobs:

Delegation saves a lot of time and energy from the superior and so he can concentrate on more important and challenging jobs while the routine jobs are delegated to the subordinates.

 2.      Allows Quick Action:

It leads to quicker action and faster, better decisions. The subordinates need not always consult his superior once the authority is delegated to him to take action.

 3.      Facilitates Training and Development:

Due to delegation, subordinates can learn to perform certain functions or to make decisions. Delegation is very much necessary if a firm is concerned about the development of personnel to assume more challenging and demanding jobs in the future.

 4.      Leads to Motivation:

Delegation may lead to higher motivation. When there is delegation, subordinates view it as a reflection of trust in their abilities. To retain the trust of the superiors the subordinates often put in their best efforts to get the work done.

 5.      Enhances Team Spirit:

The superior and the subordinate work together as a team to get the work done. This often results in higher productivity and efficiency.
