How to increase milk supply in breastfeeding mothers?

Low milk supply is often a cause of worry for a breastfeeding mother. But there are numerous ways to increase breast milk supply, which are listed below:

- Breastmilk production is a classic case of demand and supply. The more a mother breastfeeds her child , more the production of breastmilk.

- Always breastfeed from both sides.

- Additional pumping of breastmilk during the day time will signal the body to produce more breastmilk.

- If one feels that the breast is not completely empty after feeding, one can pump out the milk after each feeding session.

- Always finish feeding on one side before switching to the other side.

- Taking good care of the mother's health also improves breastmilk supply. Although easier said than done ,a good nap, a warm water bath and some relaxing time helps in the well-being of the mother and in turn the well weing of the child. Also keeping some healthy snacks and water near the chair or the couch where the mother feeds most often also helps.

- If low milk supply continues to be a problem, a lactation consultant can be of great help in guiding the mother about ways to increase milk supply.

- Certain foods are known to help in increasing breastmilk supply. These are known as lactogenic foods or galactagogues, for example, oats, fennel seeds, flax seeds, sesame seeds, garlic, bajri, green leafy vegetables are some of the food items known to increase breastmilk supply.
