How can you identify your strengths?

It is important to know what you enjoy doing, the things you do well, and the events or experiences that make you proud and enthusiastic about it.

Sometimes your energy can be combined with a disability that can be treated. For example, a person may have difficulty spelling and think he or she cannot write a creative story. Or someone has a reading problem so they think they can’t read a topic like history. By using technology or living space such as spelling checkers, speech-to-text software or CD books, students can discover that they are actually powerful in these areas.

Capacity can be formally identified in competency testing, IEPs and consistent qualifications. Another way to gain strength is to talk to people who know you well, such as your parents, teachers, and friends. Finally, you can learn about your own strengths from personal experience and activities. By participating in outreach activities, community organizations and volunteer work, certain strengths can be gained and further developed.
