INTRODUCTION AND HISTORY:

India gate, originally known as All India War Memorial is a war memorial located astride the Rajpath, it is a part of Lutyen's Delhi on the eastern edge of the ceremonial axis, New Delhi (formally called as Kingsway). India Gate is a memorial to 70,000 soldiers of the British Indian Army who died during the First World War between 1914 to 1921. Sir Edwin Lutyen started its construction and finally unveiled in the year 1933. (12th of February, to be precise). 

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN:

The 42m (380ft) tall India Gate stands on the low base of red Bharatpur stones and rises in the stage of huge moulding. The building is a hexagonal complex with a diameter of about 625 meters and covers approximately 3,06,000 msq in area. The most amazing fact about India Gate is It's an uncanny resemblance to Teli ka Mandir situated in Gwalior Fort. 

INSCRIPTION:

The framework of India Gate is inscribed with the Imperial suns, while both the sides of the arch has INDIA. Below the word INDIA in capital letter following is inscribed:

TO THE DEAD OF THE INDIA ARMIES WHO FELL AND ARE HONOURED IN THE FRANCE AND FLANDERS MESOPOTAMIA AND PERSIAN EAST AFRICA GALLIPOLI AND ELSEWHERE IN THE NEAR AND THE FAR EAST AND IN THE SACRED MEMORY ALSO OF THOSE WHOSE NAMES ARE HERE RECORDED AND WHO FELL IN INDIA OR IN THE NORTHWEST FRONTIER AND DURING THE THIRD AFGHAN WAR.
