Biotransformation

BIOTRANSFORMATION

The conversion of a small molecules into a industrially important component by means of biological system and alteration in it chemicals and genes is called Biotransformation .

This field /branch of biotechnology is gaining very much attention now due to its feasibility and importance and benefits to humans and their society. In plant tissue culture a various enzyme reaction have been listed down to be biotransformed. The most important role played in biotransformation is of enzymes that cell taken for transformation should have been specific reaction that are suitable for plants and enzymes reactions .

Two highly desired feature of plant cells are :

• More than one reaction can be accomplished  by using a particular  cell culture .

• Second , in some instances non –producing cell cultures can be used to synthesize desired end product . for example: biotransformation of  digitoxin into digoxin .obtained from Digitalis lanata(foxglove). Datura cell culture can convert hydroquinone into arbutin through glycosylation .
