Beti Bachao, Beti Pachao (Save the girl child, educate the girl child) is a Government of India scheme for generating awareness and improving the efficiency of delivery of welfare services meant for women. What prompted government to start this campaign was the fact that the Child Sex Ratio (0-6 years) in India was 927 girls per 1000 boys in 2001, which dropped drastically to 918 girls for every 1000 boys in 2011.
Speaking on International Day of the Girl Child, Prime Minister Modi called for eradication of female foeticide and invited suggestions from the citizens on "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao '' on the MyGov portal.
The five objectives of the campaign are:
Prevent gender biased sex selective elimination (also known as female foeticide)
Ensure survival & protection of the Girl Child
Ensure education of the Girl Child
Improve the Nutrition Status of the Girl Child
Promote a protective environment for the Girl Child
Later on 26 August 2016, Olympics 2016 bronze medallist Sakshi Malik was made brand ambassador for BBBP.
In social media,the hashtag #SelfieWithDaughter was promoted in June 2015, which started when Sunil Jaglan the sarpanch of the village Bibipur, Jind in Haryana took a selfie with his daughter Nandini and posted on Facebook on 9 June 2015. The hashtag garnered worldwide fame.
