INTRODUCTION AND HISTORY:

The tomb was commissioned by Humayun's first wife and chief consort, empress Haji begum in 1669-70 and was designed by Mirak Mirza Ghiyas and Humayun's son Sayyed Muhammad. These were the Persian Architects specially chosen by Haji Begum as the Tomb was built in the honor of her beloved husband and the second Mughal emperor Humayun.

After the death of Humayun, his body was taken to Purana Quila Delhi in 1556. Thereafter the body was taken to Sirhind, Punjab in 1558, which was seen by his son and the then Mughal Emperor Akhbar, he visited the tomb which was about to be completed in 1571. It cost approx 1.5 million rupees and was finally completed in the year 1572 under the influence of Haji Begum herself.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN AND CHARBAGH SYSTEM:

While the main tomb took eight years to get build the treat to the eyes was the char bagh (four gardens), a Persian style garden having a quadrilateral dissection was first of its kind in Indian sub-continent. This garden was highly geometric enclosed paradise layout divided into four sections reflecting the four rivers flowing in the Jannat. Popularly known as 'Garden of Paradise', and a design typical for later Mughal Gardens.

AN INFLUENCE TO THE TAJ MAHAL.

Well, a very few know about the influence of Humayun's Tomb over the great Taj Mahal that was built under the rule of fifth Mughal emperor Shahjahan for her beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. The similar pattern of char bagh was followed the material used for building the Taj Mahal however differs, perhaps the main design remained the same.
