CONSTRUCTION: STARTED BY QUTUB-UD-DIN AIBAK AND COMPLETED BY HIS SON-IN-LAW ILLTUMISH.


INTRODUCTION:


Qutub Minar is a Minaret that forms the part of Qutub Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Mehrauli, Delhi. This Minaret is 73 m high with five storeys and 379 steps leading to the uppermost part of the building. The diameter is 14.3m, reducing to 2.7 m at the top of the peek. The Minaret is surrounded by several significant historic monuments of the Qutub complex.


CONSTRUCTION AND HISTORY:


Its construction was started by Qutub-ud-din Aibak in 1193 as a celebration of Muslim dominance in Delhi after the defeat of the last Hindu ruler. He only got constructed the basement, later taken over by Illtumish who built three more storeys. Finally, the last two storeys were built by Firoz Shah Tuglak.


Apart from Qutub Minar, the complex include Qwwt-us-Islam Mosque (the first mosque in India). The seven-meter high iron pillar, which was built by the Gupta Dynasty. Along with it, there is also a tomb of Iltumish and an Ala'l Minar.
