INTRODUCTION AND ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN:

Hawa Mahal (meaning: the palace of wind or the palace of breeze), is a palace in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India which is built of red and pink sandstone. The palace was designed by Lal Chand Ustad inspired by the structure of Khetri Mahal. Its unique 5-floor exterior is akin to the honeycomb beehive with its 953 windows called Jharokhas decorated with intricate latticework.

The original purpose of windows and the latticework was to allow royal ladies to observe festivals and everyday life celebrated in the streets below since they had to strictly obey Purday system. This architectural feature also allowed cool air from the venturi effect to pass through, thus making the whole area more pleasant during the high temperature in summers.
