4 brilliant things about being an English Literature student

1. There are so many choices!
Readers of English Books have been offered a choice compared to many other subjects.

In all my degrees I have found many options for which modules to take, to the point that currently in my final year, all my modules can be selected (yay!).

Even in mandatory modules, I have always had options to choose from for a variety of questions and what texts to write on. For example, in a module where you read twelve texts (one text per week, whether that is a play, a novel, or a critical reading for example) in the final story you may just need to choose two books to write about.

2. You get amazing books that you would never read otherwise.
Some of the books on English titles I would never have picked up if they were not in the syllabus. While a book or style of writing from time to time may not sound familiar to you, it is really interesting and important to read books in a relaxed environment.

3. English degrees encourage you to think for yourself.

There is a reason why one of Eng Eng’s ‘transferable skills’ tags is labeled ‘analytical’.

Reading English books opens up different perspectives and gives you the skills to analyze, not accept blindly, what you see on the page.

4. Eng lit degrees can lead to very new jobs…

One of the most frequently asked questions as an English Literature student is what my degree will lead to, looking at the career path may seem less ambiguous than a career-based study such as Nursing or Law.

I like to think that choosing to study something that you enjoy is the best way to do a job that you will enjoy.

The telecommunications industry has exciting and intelligent jobs that most Literacy students find themselves attracted to. Journalism, public relations (PR), advertising and teaching are just some of the common activities English Lit grads continue to undertake.
