Biography of Mani Ratnam :
Mani Ratnam is a noted Indian screen writer, producer and film maker. He makes films in Tamil as well as Hindi. He got into film making only after obtaining a degree in commerce, an MBA and then working as a management consultant. He took the plunge with the help of his producer brother. Mani Ratnam made his directorial debut with the Kannada film Pallavi Anu Pallavi (1983) starring Anil Kapoor. The movie was a good start to his career, but following this he was unable to churn out a box office success for 3 years. In 1986 came Tamil romantic drama Mouna Ragam. However, Mani Ratnam's popularity got a major boost with Nayagan starring Kamaal Hassan. This movie went on to be listed in TIME magazine's 100 all time greatest films.
By this time, Mani Ratnam was churning out hit after hit. His association with noted music director Illaiyaraja soon came to an end and Mani Ratnam took debutante A.R. Rahman for his film Roja. The collaboration proved to be successful and till date they are doing wonders. Mani Ratnam was a master in taking real life issues and stories and converting them into powerful and meaningful cinema. Some such endeavors were Dil Se, Iruvar, Yuva and Guru. All these movies were blockbuster films. He has won a number of awards throughout his career, including five National Film Awards, five Filmfare Awards (South), four Filmfare Awards (Hindi), and ten international film festival awards. He now runs his production company, Madras Talkies.
