Robert Hughes was an Australian art critic, writer and television documentary maker who lived in New York. His writings include American Visions: The Epic History of Art in America, The Art of Australia, Barcelona, Barcelona: the Great Enchantress, Culture of Complaint, Donald Friend, The Fatal Shore, Frank Auerbach, Goya, Heaven and Hell in Western Art, A Jerk on One End: Reflections of a Mediocre Fisherman, Lucian Freud Paintings, Nothing if Not Critical: Selected Essays on Art and Artists, Rome: A Cultural, Visual and Personal History, The Shock of the New: Art and the Century of Change, and Things I Didn’t Know: A Memoir. He was born in 1938 in Sydney. His father, Geoffrey Forrest Hughes and paternal grandfather were lawyers. His brother, Thomas Eyre Forrest Hughes, is an Australian lawyer and former Attorney-General of Australia.

Robert Hughes attended the University of Sydney to study Arts and Architecture. He was part of the Sydney ‘Push’ along withGermaine Greer and Clive James. He started his career as a cartoonist and art critic. He lived in Italy and then in London. He worked for The Spectator, The Daily Telegraph, The Times, and The Observer. He went on to become the art critic of the Time magazine.

Robert Hughes died on August 6, 2012 in New York.
