Nirad C. Chaudhuri is synonymous with his writings such as The Autobiography of an Unknown Indian, A Passage to England, The Continent of Circe, The Intellectual in India, To Live or Not to Live, Scholar Extraordinary, The Life of Professor the Right Honourable Friedrich Max Muller, Culture in the Vanity Bag, Clive of India, Hinduism: A Religion to Live by, Thy Hand, Great Anarch!, Three Horsemen of the New Apocalypse, The East is East and West is West, From the Archives of a Centenarian, and Why I Mourn for England.  His writings in Bengali include Bangali Jibane Ramani, Atmaghati Bangali, Atmaghati Rabindranath, Amar Debottar Sampatti, Nirbachita Prabandha, and Aji Hote Satabarsha Age.

Nirad C. Chaudhuri was born on November 23, 1897 at Kishoreganj. He studied at Kishoreganj and Kolkata. He studied History at the University of Calcutta where he topped the merit list. He started out as a clerk in the Accounting Department of the Indian Army. He started writing articles for different magazines at this time.  He went on to work as a journalist and began to write for Modern Review, Probasi, and Sonibarer Chithi. He also founded two popular Bengali magazines, Samasamayik and Notun Patrika. He also worked as a secretary to the famous freedom fighter, Sarat Chandra Bose. His interactions with several political leaders left a taste of pessimism in the ideology and ability of the Indian leadership later. Later he worked for the Kolkata and Delhi branches of the All India Radio.

Nirad C. Chaudhuri continued to write until he was 99. He died in 1999.
