Meer Taqi Meer (born 1723 - died 1810) was a leading Urdu poet of the 18th century today remembered as one of the pioneers who shaped Urdu. He remains the foremost name in Urdu poetry.
Meer was born in Agra, India (then called Akbarabad). His philosophy of life was formed primarily by his father who emphasized on love and compassion. Meer left for Delhi shortly after his father passed away.
Some scholars consider Meer\'s poems: Mu\'amlat-e-ishq (The Stages of Love) and Khwab o khyal-e Mir as inspired by his early love affairs, but it is not clear how autobiographical these accounts are.
Meer spent most of his living years in Mughal Delhi. He eventually moved to Lucknow. He was pained to witness the plundering of the Delhi he loved very much.
After he shifted base to Lucknow, his daughter, son and wife passed away. This trauma is very well reflected in his works. He is best remembered for verses on pathos and melancholy.
