Makarand Paranjape was born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He studied at the Bishop Cotton Boys\' School, Bangalore and completed B.A. (Hons.) in English from St. Stephen\'s College, University of Delhi. He then joined the University of Illinois from where he did his M.A. in English and subsequently his Ph.D in English on "Mysticism in Indian English Poetry".
Makarand has been a critic, poet, novelist, short-story writer, literary columnist, and reviewer. He has edited or authored about 35 books and published more than 100 academic papers both in India and abroad. Along with this Paranjpe has penned poems, short stories, and more than 250 periodical essays, reviews, and other publications.
At JNU he teaches courses that include American Literature, Indian Literature in English/Translation, Readings in Literary Theory and Criticism, Indian Literature in English/Translation, Globalizing India: Literature, Culture, Society, Literature and Allied Arts.
