Dr. Devdutt Pattanaik (born 1970) is an Indian physician turned leadership consultant, mythologist and author whose works focus largely on the areas of myth, mythology, and management. He has written a number of books related to Hindu mythology, including Myth = Mithya: A Handbook of Hindu Mythology, The Pregnant King, and Jaya: An Illustrated Retelling of the Mahabharata.
He is the Chief Belief Officer of Future Group, one of India’s largest retailers, bringing the wisdom of Indian mythology into Indian business, especifically in human resource management. He also writes a column for the newspaper Mid Day.
He has also published fiction, a novel based on a tale from the Mahabharata, titled The Pregnant King published by Penguin.
Early life and education
Born and brought up in Mumbai, he spent spent his childhood and student life in Chembur, Mumbai. His father was an MBA. He graduated in medicine (M.B.B.S.) from Grant Medical College, Mumbai and subsequently did a course in comparative mythology from Mumbai University.
Career
A medical doctor by education, a leadership consultant by profession, he is essentially a mythologist by passion. He has written and lectured extensively on the nature of sacred stories, symbols and rituals and their relevance in modern times.
He worked in the Pharma and Healthcare industry for 14 years, before turning to comparative mythology, and soon started writing books around mythology, and columns and lectures on the subject. He worked as a consultant in Ernst and Young and is an illustrator for most of his books.
After completing an undergraduate degree in medicine, he opted out of specialisation in surgery to pursue medical marketing and communication. This move led Pattanaik to build a career in the pharmaceutical industry, first as an independent vendor following which he was instrumental in establishing a website (Goodhealthnyou.com) that became a success. It was here that he discovered his ability to manage a team effectively and this experience led to many others in the industry. In the years that followed, Pattanaik had several opportunities to understand power and leadership, from close quarters. And he felt that as a result of the power struggle, there was a gap between what was thought, said and done.

Dr. Pattanaik currently resides in Mumbai.
