John D’costa was born in New Delhi, India, to a Goan family. Did his early years of school at St. Columbas High School. He didn’t like music much when he was young and would often put the music player off if no one was around. His brother was then playing for the school band as a drummer and one day John went to see his brother perform for a school event. That day, he was so impressed by his brothers performance that he proudly told all people that “Domnic is MY brother”. From that day he took keen interest in listening to music and tried singing.

As he grew up he almost lost interest in music again until his father got retired and the family decided to move back to their hometown, Goa, the land of sun and sea. John came to Goa and continued his school years and that’s when he made friends with some local boys who would sing and play instruments. Thus, the journey into music took off. He took keen interest in learning the guitar. He would learn from his friends and practise for hours. He still remembers how he would wake up in the middle of the night just because he remembered a certain ‘chord’ and wanted to see if it was right for the song that he had been practising the whole day. The guitar would always be by his side. One time, his music teacher in school didn’t like his singing but instead of breaking his heart he told John to go on stage for a group song and told him to move his lips but not to get his voice out. Years later, John went back to that same school as a part time music teacher. That year they won the trophy for the inter-school singing competition.

He believes in practise makes perfect. There were times when he would stand in front of the band and watch the guitarist play a song, he would then immediately leave the reception party and go home just to practise that. If the reception venue was near by then he would come back to watch and learn some more and again go home to practise. He remembers one night when he came back to the venue 3 times.

With lots of practise and hard work he finally learnt some songs and as all musicians, he too joined a local band. Bands weren’t payed so much then so they would carry their own sound just to save money. There was a time when he was doing a day job and played for a band at night at a hotel just to support his family. He even spent nights sleeping in the hotel coach or walked home as he had no vehicle of his own. He moved from band to band and started playing at many gigs, hotels, ceremonies, etc., Even played for shows and contracts all over India. Other than bands he played for the choir at the local church.

Things were not going too well for the band and John decided to take a break and got a job overseas. This changed his profession and he joined the casino industry. Worked abroad for 8 years on cruise lines and that’s where he met his true love. However, when onboard he continued playing at the crew bar and certain crew and passenger shows, whenever he could. Eventually came the day when John and his to be wife decided to quit and settle down. They got married a year later and settled in Goa. They now have been blessed with a beautiful baby girl.

As time went by he got back to his music. One day as he was practising he came across a tune in his mind. Before he knew it, he had got the lyrics and the music flowing. In the next two months he wrote the remaining songs and decided to launch an album.

He says that he likes to keep his songs simple. Songs that are easy to play and easy to sing. He thanks God for all the blessings in his life.
