Wh Auden Biography and latest books by Wh Auden

Wystan Hugh Auden (popularly called WH Auden) was born on February 21 in 1907 in York, England. His father was the illustrious physician George Augustus Auden and his mother was Constance Rosalie Bicknell Auden. He had two older brothers: George Bernard Auden who became a farmer and John Bicknell Auden who was a geologist. The Audens went to live in Harborne, Birmingham. He went to the first boarding school when he was eight years old. He wanted to be a mining engineer as a child; however he realized that his true calling was writing.

Auden was sent to St. Edmund\'s School, Surrey, where he met Christopher Isherwood who became a famous novelist. He was also a friend of Edward Upward. Then he studied at Gresham\'s School where he met the later renowned painter, Robert Medley who asked him if he wrote poetry. He went on to study at Christ College, Oxford on a scholarship in Biology; however he switched over to English Literature.  At college, he met Cecil Day Lewis, Louis MacNeice, and Sir Stephen Harold Spender and the four of them were referred to as the Auden Group. He passed out Oxford with a third-class degree. He stayed in Berlin for a while until he returned to England and worked as a tutor. He spent a while in Iceland and wrote Letters from Iceland. He always held an Icelandic fascination all his life. He taught at the University of Michigan and won a Guggenheim scholarship. He became an American citizen in 1945.

Some of his Auden’s most famous writings are Poems, The Orators: An English Study, The Dance of Death, The Dog Beneath the Skin, The Ascent of F6, Look, Stranger! Letters from Iceland, On the Frontier, Journey to a War, Another Time, Thank You, Fog: Last Poems, The Shield of Achilles, The Dyer\'s Hand, For the Time Being, and Homage to Clio. He died on September 29, 1973 in Vienna.
