Simone De Beauvoir was born on January 8, 1908 in Paris. She attended the Sorbonne and studied Philosophy. That was when she met existentialist writer, Jean Paul Sartre while qualifying for the agrégation in philosophy. She stood second in the examination. She began working as a teacher at a secondary school in Marseilles. Her writings were influenced by Sartre. She authored the widely-acclaimed book, The Second Sex.  She also authored The Blood of Others, The Mandarins, Must We Burn Sade?, The Long March, Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter, The Prime of Life, Force of Circumstance, A Very Easy Death, Les Belles Images, The Woman Destroyed, The Coming of Age, All Said and Done, When Things of the Spirit Come First, Adieux: A Farewell to Sartre, Letters to Sartre, and A Transatlantic Love Affair: Letters to Nelson Algren.

Although Beauvoir never considered herself a philosopher, her views and writings on existentialism established her as a philosopher. Her metaphysical novels, She Came to Stay and The Mandarins, and her discourse, The Second Sex paved the way to contemporary feminism and described the oppression of women.
