Shirin Ebadi is an Iranian lawyer, human rights activist, former judge, and author. Her books include Iran Awakening: One Woman\'s Journey to Reclaim Her Life and Country (with Azadeh Moaveni), Refugee Rights in Iran, and The Golden Cage: three brothers, three choices, once destiny. Currently, she lives in the U.K.
Shirin Ebadi was born in Hamadan in Iran. Her father, Mohammad Ali Ebadi was a professor of Commercial Law. She studied Law in the University of Tehran. She completed her Masters and in 1975, she became the first female judge in Iran. However as a result of the rise of the clerics after the Iranian revolution, they forbade the position of women as judges. Therefore Shirin Ebadi was demoted to a secretarial position. She protested along with other lawyers and she was promoted to a position that was a little higher which was that of a law expert. She retired and devoted her time to writing. Today, she has also founded two non-governmental organizations Society for Protecting the Rights of the Child (SPRC) and the Defenders of Human Rights Center (DHRC).
