Sharif Kunjahi Biography and latest books by Sharif Kunjahi

Born in a small town named Kunjah of the Gujrat District in Punjab, Sahrif Kunjahi was a renowned writer and poet of Punjab. One of the first faculty members of the Department of Punjabi Language in the Punjab University, Kunjahi contributed widely to the Punjabi language as a poet, prose writer, teacher, research scholar, linguist, lexicographer and translator. He also wrote poems in Urdu and Persian languages and was a well-known poet.

Kunjahi completed his schooling in Kunjah and his higher secondary education from Government Intermediate College, Jehlum. He completed his Munshi Fazal and BA from Punjab University and went on to get his MA in Urdu and Persian. While doing so he served as a lecturer in many institutions. He was a lecturer in Persian language at Government College, Campbalpur and was transferred to Government College, Jehlum from where he retired in 1973.

Sharif Kunjahi’s first love was always Punjabi though he wrote many poems in Urdu and Persian. Being a Muslim this was very rare. His first collection of Punjabi poetry Jagrate which meant “Sleepless Nights” was first published in Gurmukhi in East Punjab in 1958. Sharif Kunjahi contributions to the Punjabi literature has taken the Punjabi language to a new high and his contributions will always be cherished for ages to come.
