Bandyopadhyay was a writer who indulged in various kinds of prose, right from short stories to novels, screenplays and plays. Poems and songs were also part of his oeuvre. His most famous work is easily the Bengali fictional detective Byomkesh Bakshi. The first Bakshi story appeared in 1932. The Hindi TV series in the 90\'s and the subsequent English translation in 2003 has only added to the popularity of the lean detective.
Bandyopadhyay shifted base to Mumbai in 1938. He worked there on screenplays for Hindi films and film posters.In 1952,looking to get back to writing, he left Bombay for good for Pune. Here, he wrote children\'s stories, ghost stories, historical romance novels in Bengali, until his death in 1970.
The writer was adept in satire, witticisms, humour in his writings.His delving into man-woman relationships is particularly noted for its depth and exploration.
