Satyajit Ray was a legendary Indian film maker and author. His most famous writings include My years with Apu, Bravo Professor Shonku, Phatik Chand, The adventures of Feluda, The mystery of the elephant god: more adventures of Feluda, Royal Bengal Mystery and Other Feluda Stories, Feluda\'s last case, House of Death and Other Feluda Stories, The Unicorn Expedition, and Other Fantastic Tales of India, Mystery of the Pink Pearl; The Final Feluda Stories, Night of the Indigo, and Twenty Stories.

Ray was born in 1921 in former Kolkata. He was born into an illustrious family whose ancestry could be traced back to ten generations. His father, Sukumar Ray was a children’s author while his grandfather, Upendrakishore Ray was a writer, illustrator, philosopher, publisher, amateur astronomer and a leader of the Brahmo Samaj. He attended Ballygunge Government High School and Presidency College, University of Calcutta where he studied Economics. Later he went to Visva-Bharati University at Shantiniketan where he became appreciative of Oriental Art. He began his career as a junior visualize at D.J. Keymer, a British advertising firm. Later he worked at Signet Press and worked on the book covers of several books such as Jibanananda Das\'s Banalata Sen, and Rupasi Bangla, Jim Corbett\'s Maneaters of Kumaon, Jawaharlal Nehru\'s Discovery of India, and Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay’s Pather Panchali.

Together with Chidananda Dasgupta, Ray started the Calcutta Film Society and moved to film making. His films reveal his humanism. He was a recipient of the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin Film Festival, Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Legion of Honor by the President of France, Bharat Ratna by the Government of India, Honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement, and the Akira Kurosawa Award for Lifetime Achievement in Directing (posthumously awarded). He also received an Honorary Doctorate from Oxford University. He died in 1992.
