Winner of the 2012 Pen Pinter Prize with Carol Ann Duffy, Samar Yazbek is a Syrian writer, journalist, and human rights activist. She has won the award for her book titled A Woman in the Crossfire. She was born in Jableh and she specialized in Arabic Literature at university. Her book titled Tiflat as-Sama (Heavenly Girl) discusses taboos that exist in the Syrian society. She has also written Salsal (Clay). She participated in the 2011 protests in Syria against the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s regime. She has written plays, television dramas, and documentary films too. In 2010, she was chosen as one of the Beirut39, a group of 39 Arab writers under the age of 40 via a contest organized by the Banipal magazine and the Hay Festival.
