Phanishwar Nath is remembered for promoting the difficulties of contemporary rural India through Aanchalik Upanyas (Regional Story).
Phanishwar Nath was born in a Kshatriya family on 4 March, 1921 at village near Forbesganj, Bihar. He studied in India and Nepal. After passing out from Kashi Hindu Vishvavidyalay in 1942 he took part in the Indian Freedom Struggle. Later he participated in the Nepali revolutionary movement which resulted in founding democracy in Nepal.
His very first novel which is also considered his masterpiece, Maila Anchal (The Soiled Linen, 1954), was a social novel that depicted the life of rural Bihar. The book concentrated on the backward and the deprived.
