Pearl Sydenstricker Buck, popularly known as Pearl S. Buck was an American writer. She was also known by her Chinese name Sai Zhenzhu. Her most-widely read book is The Good Earth which won her the Pulitzer Prize. She won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1932. Her other books include East Wind: West Wind; Sons, A House Divided, The Mother, This Proud Heart, The Patriot, Other Gods, China Sky, Dragon Seed, The Promise, China Flight, The Townsman, Portrait of a Marriage, Pavilion of Women, The Angry Wife, Peony, A Long Love, The Bondmaid, Kinfolk, God’s Men, The Hidden Flowers, Come, My Beloved; Letter from Peking, Command the Morning, Satan never Sleeps, The Living Reed, Death in the Castle, The Time is Noon, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John; The New Year, The Three Daughters of Madame Liang, Mandala, The Goddess Abides, All under Heaven and The Rainbow. Her autobiographies include My Several Worlds: A Personal Record and A Bridge for Passing. She has written two biographies: The Exile and The Fighting Angel. She wrote numerous short stories too.

Pear S. Buck was born in West Virginia, U.S. Her parents returned to China where they were before her birth. They were Southern Presbyterian missionaries. She was home-schooled and she attended Randolph-Macon Woman\'s College in Lynchburg, Virginia, U.S. She received a Masters from Cornell University. She married a missionary, John Lossing Buck and they traveled to China. The settled down on the campus of the University of Nanking where she taught English Literature. She worked on multiple disciplines: teaching, political activism and writing.

Pear S. Buck was also a recipient of the William Dean Howells Medal. She died in 1973.
