Nanak Singh (July 4, 1897 – 1971) was a poet, songwriter and novelist who contributed to Punjabi literature. In fact, his thought provoking writing in support of India\'s independence movement led to his arrest by the British.
He wrote the novel Pavitar Paapi in 1942. The novel won him literary acclaim. The book was also adapted into a motion picture (Pavitra Paapi) in 1968 by Balraj Sahani. His grandson, Navdeep Singh Suri, has even translated the book into English. The translation is called Saintly Sinner.
Quoting the Tribune, “Nanak Singh was the bestselling novelist in India for 30 to 40 years. He wrote over 50 books including novels and collection of short stories. He made significant contributions to various literary genres…He depicted excerpts from contemporary life, cloaked with a veil of romantic idealism.”
