Mohan Singh changed the style and theme of Punjabi poetry altogether. He was born in Mardaan (now in Pakistan), but grew up in Dhamial (Rawalpindi). He did a Master\'s degree in Farsi and started his career as a Lecturer of Persian language in Khalsa College, Amritsar. He launched a Punjabi monthly called Punj Darya & even started a publishing house.
In a span of five decades, Mohan Singh published eight volumes of verse besides the epic, Nankayan. He produced powerful poetry, and the conflict between blood and judgment, between body and soul, between dream and reality became recurring themes.
His first collection Saave Pattar (The Green Leaves) had romantic poems describing the rural life of Punjab, its landscape, flora, fauna, young men and maidens. His collection Boohe (Doors) made use of multiple techniques, forms and styles.
Mohan Singh was a progressive poet and aimed at changing the world for the betterment of the common man. He was even conferred with the Sahitya Akademi award in 1959 for Wadda Vela.
