Mary Shelley is best known for the 1818 Frankenstein still considered a classic in Gothic literature. Frankenstein was published when Shelley was only 21. Shelley was also a essayist, biographer, travel writer and short story writer. Her husband was none other than the romantic poet Percy Shelley, whose works she edited too.

Born Mary Godwin, the writer\'s parents were philosophers. Mary\'s affair with Percy, one of her father\'s political followers started in 1814. By the time she returned to England from a trip to Europe, she was pregnant with Percy\'s child. The next two years was harrowing for the couple, from troubles ranging from debt, social isolation, the child\'s death and the suicide of Percy\'s first wife.

Mary and Percy married in 1816. They had the company of luminaries including poet Lord Byron that 1816 summer in Geneva, Switzerland. This was when Mary first got the idea for Frankenstein. In 1822 Percy died in a boating accident, and dedicated herself to raising her son and writing for a living. Before her death at the age of 53, Mary wrote historical novels like Valperga (1823) and Perkin Warbeck (1830), The Last Man (1826), Lodore (1835) and her last published novel, Falkner (1837).Mary also published Rambles in Germany and Italy (1844), a travel book.
