Margaret Mascarenhas is a writer of Goan origin. She was born in the US, but her parents choose to raise her in Venezuelan. Margaret is an art critic, independent curator, consulting editor, columnist and novelist. She has also authored diasporic novel, Skin, published by Penguin India (2001); in French translation by Mercure de France (2002). She is also the Director of Sunaparanta, Goa Centre for the Arts. Margaret lives and works most of the year in Goa, India.

Margaret said in an interview that she has changed many homes and has lived in many parts of the world when she was growing up. She has called different parts of Venezuela, the US (California and Michigan), France, and India her home and this has helped her shape her opinion differently. As an adult she also travelled a lot - many parts of Europe, the Middle East, South Asia.

Margaret said in an interview, “Growing up in diverse cities has blessed me with many points of reference in terms of culture and geopolitics, which is reflected in my world view and of course in my writing.”

And therein lies its inherent flaw. Even before one can wonder what really happened, the narrative has moved to the next branch of the family tree. Instead of being a saga, Skin reads as a series of vignettes, enchanting as they are, quite unsatisfying.
