Kiran Desai is an Indian born author who shot into fame with her novel, The Inheritance of Loss. She is the daughter on noted author Anita Desai and is a permanent resident of United States. She also won the 2006 Man Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award in Fiction.

Kiran Desai was born on 3rd September, 1971 in New Delhi, India. At the age of 11, she and her mother left for England where they lived there for a year. A year later they moved to the United States, where she studied at Bennington College, Hollins University and Columbia University to pursue her creative writings.

In the year 1998, her first novel ‘Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard’ was published and received critical acclaims. It took her four years to complete the novel. The novel won her the Betty Trask Award. The main character in the novel was Sampath Chawla - a failed postal clerk. The novel basically revolves around this guy and his picturesque family. The novel ends in a sense of impending doom, with the town officials and the family trying to end the problem of Sampath Chawla.

This was followed by her second novel, The Inheritance of Loss, which was published in 2006. This became a critically acclaimed novel and won her praises from critics from Europe, Asia and the United States. The novel was pictured in India, as well as in United States. It captures the emotion and the feelings of an immigrant coming to the West from the East. The book had very sensual and rich descriptions about the emotions of an immigrant. It was also a more ambitious project than her first novel. The novel won her the 2006 Man Booker Prize. It also got her the National Book Critics Circle Award in Fiction.

Kiran Desai was featured in May 2007 at the inaugural of Asia House Festival of Asian Literature. She was also a guest judge on Private Passions in September 2007. The show was a biographical music discussion program hosted by Michael Berkeley on BBC Radio 3. Currently Kiran Desai is in a relationship with Nobel Laureate, Orhan Pamuk.
