Kaveri Nambisan Biography and latest books by Kaveri Nambisan

Kaveri Nambisan is a surgeon, writer of children’s fiction and novelist. Kaveri writes voraciously on health issues and also against female feticide. This doctor-cum-author says that "it is life that feeds literature".


Kaveri was born in the coffee and spice district of Karnataka, Coorg. She studied Medicine from St. John’s Medical College, Bangalore and moved to England for her further studies. With England unable to interest her for long, she came back to India and began medical practice in Mokama, Bihar, which is a dacoit infested place. She has also worked in other rural areas in Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. In fact, she has also been awarded the Tata Excellence Award for her contribution as a doctor in Tamil Nadu.


Kaveri initially married Dr. K. R. Bhatt, who studied at St. John’s with her. The marriage ended after 18 years. She has a daughter named Chetna from that marriage. Kaveri then married a famous poet Vijay Nambisan.


Kaveri began writing for a women’s magazine but when she began writing for children did realized that writing stories for children was her true calling. In fact, her children’s story titled Once Upon a Forest, was adapted into a television serial.


Her other books The Hills of Angheri, Mango Colored Fish, On the Wings of Butterflies, and The Scent of Pepper are also popular. Her recent book, The Story That Must Not Be Told was even chosen for the Man Asian Literary Prize in 2008.
