Kabir was a poet and a saint and is also remembered for being part of the Bhakti movement. He recited poetry in Hindi borrowing dialects from Avadhi, Braj, and Bhojpuri. Two of his disciples, Bhagodas and Dharmadas wrote down most of his poetry. His banis or utterances are categorized under songs and couplets or dohe. His most famous piece of work is the ‘Bijak’.
Kabir was born near Banaras where he was adopted by a Moslem weaver and his wife. He never renounced the worldly life and worked as a tradesman.
