Sheikh Muhammad Ibrahim Zauq was born at Delhi in 1789. Zauq was considered a contemporary of Ghalib. He went to a maktab (elementary religious school) run by Hafiz Ghulam Rasool. It was during his schooling years under Hafiz that Ibrahim developed a liking for poetry. Some of Zauq’s major poetical work was lost during the mutiny of 1857. Zauq’s eulogies reflect his command over the Urdu language and his ability to compose poetry in difficult meters. His ghazals carry literary worth too. Zauq composed his ghazals using spontaneous simple words, everyday phrases and descriptions of a common binding culture. Even though much of his work was lost, he left behind a legacy of ghazal, qasida, and mukhammas.
