Herbert Edwin Huncke was an American writer and poet from the Beat generation. His writings include Guilty of Everything: The Autobiography of Herbert Huncke, The Evening Sun Turned Crimson, Huncke\'s Journal, The Herbert Huncke Reader, Again–The Hospital, and From Dream to Dream. He was born on January 9 in 1915 in Greenfield, Massachusetts and grew up in Chicago. He was a high school dropout and a drug user. He lived as a hobo bonding with other hobos and he hitchhiked to New York City. He was known for frequenting 42nd Street and was referred to as the ‘Mayor of 42nd Street’. During the Second World War, he served as a United States Merchant Marine and he landed at Normandy three days after the invasion. When he returned to New York, he met William S. Burroughs and they became friends. He also became friends with Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac. They encouraged him to publish his journals.
Huncke was an effortless storyteller. He published his autobiography, Guilty of Everything in the 1990s. He died at the age of 81.
