Miller was primarily a writer and a painter. His novels, that combined his hedonistic experiences with fiction, sexual encounters, philosophy and the surreal, broke the mould with a continuous typing style that went with the narrative. Tropic of Cancer (1934), Black Spring (1936) and Tropic of Capricorn (1939) were banned in the US for more than two decades on the grounds of obscenity. Subsequently, the books gained a cult following in the underground literature market in the states. Essays and travelogues were also part of his oeuvre.

Miller\'s meeting with Anais Nin in Paris, where he was leading a financially limited life with his second wife June Edith Smith, is said to have a great impact on his life, altering its course. Nin was also married; she and Miller became lovers. Eventually Nin financed the first edition printing of Tropic of Cancer. Tropic of Cancer was eventually published in US after the lifting of the ban in 1961, a landmark moment in literature.

In 1968, was in support of the \'Writers and Editors War Tax Protest\', an anti-Vietnam war protest by not paying taxes. Miller lived his last years in the pacific Palisades, where he died in 1980, he was 88.
