Hanif Kureishi is a British short story writer, novelist, and filmmaker. He was born in 1975 in Bromley, to a Pakistani father and British mother. He studied at Bromley Technical High School and Bromley College of Technology. He studied Philosophy at Lancaster University and King’s College, London.
Kureishi started out as a pornography writer under the pseudonyms of Karim and Antonia French. His book, The Buddha of Suburbia won the Whitbread Award and was turned into a television series. His novel, Intimacy was made into a film by Patrice Chereau. It won two Bears at the Berlin Film Festival - a Golden Bear for Best Film and a Silver Bear for Best Actress. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2008.
