Gerald Bernard Francis Hamilton was born in 1888 in Shanghai. He studied at Rugby School. He was known for his friendships with Sir Winston Churchill, Aleister Crowley, Robin Maugham, Tallulah Bankhead, John Symonds, and Christopher Isherwood. He was Irish and a Roman Catholic. He was interned during both the First World War and the Second World War. He was known for his stand on the Second World War; he was anti-war.
Hamilton was the inspiration behind Christopher Isherwood’s character Arthur Norris in Mr. Norris Changes Trains. Isherwood also sketched his character in his autobiography Christopher and his Kind. Robin Maugham wrote about Hamilton in Search for Nirvana. He died in 1970.
