Felice Benuzzi is most-famous for his book titled No Picnic on Mount Kenya (the title is Fuga sul Kenya in the Italian version). It is his account of their escape from boredom as a Prisoner-of-War (PoW) with two other Italian prisoners to reach the summit of Mount Kenya. They were PoWs of the British. This book inspired the movie The Ascent.
Felice Benuzzi was born in 1910 in Vienna. He was of Italian-Austrian origin and he was raised in Trieste. He began his mountaineering in the Julian Alps and the Dolomites. He attended the University of Rome where he studied Law. He began his career as a diplomat in the erstwhile Italian Colonial Service. He was stationed in Italian-occupied Abyssinia (former Ethiopia) where he was captured by the Allied forces and was imprisoned in a British camp. Later he served as a diplomat and served in France, Pakistan, Australia, Former West Germany, and as Head of Delegation with the United Nations. He also served as the Italian ambassador to Uruguay.
Benuzzi was an international swimmer and represented Italy.
